4 Types of Blogs That Need More Than Written Content

September 19, 2014 by: 1

Study after study has shown that today’s consumers don’t want to get bogged down by blocks of text. They want easily digestible content they can consume on the go, such as Vine-esque videos, infographics and memes. While there are still blogs largely featuring text content alone, that only works in certain niches and industries. If you’re an up and coming blogger, make sure you match your demographics to the type of content they want.

There are many types of blogs where the majority of the content is best done visually. You may curate this content, ask your readers to submit, or legally use others’ content as long as it’s correctly cited. This is a boon to bloggers who aren’t very confident in their writing skills, and also levels the playing field.

Here are some of the most important types of blogs that could benefit from visuals:

  1. Travel blogs

A picture really is worth a thousand words, and why would someone want to read a description of a beach, property or foreign city when they could check out photos and videos? Planning a vacation isn’t like reading fiction; you don’t want to imagine what it’ll be like. You want a realistic view of what to expect.

  1. Art and film review sites

If your blog is all about reviewing the arts, whether it’s a play, gallery opening of film, give your readers something to base their reaction upon. You may have to get permission to post pieces of art, scour the web for legal stills or otherwise get creative with your photography, but it’ll pack more punch and draw in more readers.

  1. How-to blogs

There are a few major types of learners and the odds of all your readers doing best by reading instructions is slim to none. Instead, help out different types of learners by including videos and photos with your instructions. It’s easier to follow and will appeal to more.

  1. Cooking blogs

Are you known for whipping up special recipes, whether it’s sheer decadence or something with Paleo leanings? Include videos and photos of the finished result as well as visuals for instructions that might be confusing to newbie cooks. Don’t assume that everyone will know what “folding” looks like.

Many blogs could bolster rankings by including more visuals. Are you missing out on an entire demographic because you’re stuck in text content only mode?
