Blogging to Be Green

If you’re looking for green resources on the Internet, there are many blogs around the interwebs for you to gather your information from. Some of the major topics that beginning “go-green”-ers are curious about include gardening (indoor and outdoor), recycling, and energy consumption.

Gardening

Growing your own food is a great way to go green; and you don’t have to own acres of land to do it. The Urban Organic Gardener provides a comprehensive guide to getting a garden up and running in an apartment or urban space.

This is often referred to as “container gardening” because, well, you pretty much have to grow everything in containers. You have to consider a lot of things when you’re growing food: the type of soil, proper drainage and sunlight, growing and harvesting season, and where you get your seeds.

Home-growing is good for the environment because you aren’t participating in the harmful growing practices used on many large farms. You also aren’t contributing to the massive global transport of produce, which leads to immense amounts of fossil fuel burning.

Recycling

There are many blogs dedicated to the practice of recycling and reducing the amount of waste that people produce. The “Zero Waste Home” takes reducing trash very seriously, and she has lots of tips for reducing your waste in almost any area of your life.

Other blogs feature “upcycling,” which is the practice of taking something and using it for another purpose. This includes using milk cartons to grow plants, pallets to make furniture, and many other ideas.

Many blogs dedicated to recycling also focus on the misconceptions that people have about the practice of recycling. Just because you toss something in a recycling bin doesn’t necessarily mean it actually gets repurposed.

Many people are confused about what you can actually recycle and what you can’t, and what happens at recycling plants.

Energy consumption

European blog Smart Energy Efficiency offers lots of posts devoted to helping people convert energy and put less stress on their environment. There are a surprising number of ways to reduce your energy use (and your electric bill). Small adjustments in lifestyle can make a big difference and help you on your journey to become more “green.”

In addition to making your own smart energy choices, you can help your city become greener as well. Getting involved in local politics and helping make change at a municipal level can have a positive impact on our overall energy use.

Great tips! There’s so many different ways that you can make a difference when it comes to the environment, and people tend to think that small things aren’t much help. In reality, they add up very quickly, and they need to be spread to others. Green blogging is the perfect way to do that.
