Blogging: Still Alive and Kickin’ in 2014

October 10, 2014 by: 5

Some people have argued that blogging is dead after having been killed by social media such as Facebook and Twitter. These sites allow people to make short updates, photos, videos and links to other sites, and ever since they’ve gone mainstream they’ve been the go-to methods for teenagers and millennials to express themselves online. The stories of blogging’s demise have argued that there is no need for long text posts when 140 characters will do just fine. It’s been reported that blogging by American teenagers fell by half between 2006 and 2010.

So, is there any real truth to these arguments? Is blogging as it once existed dead? Absolutely not. While the number of casual bloggers has gone down, blogging itself is just as important and useful as it ever was. The loss of so many casual bloggers just means that the blogs that have “survived” are stronger and more relevant than ever.

What Blogging Can Do For You

The reason why blogging has survived in this age of social media is because there is so much that it can do, whether you are keeping a personal blog or you are using it to promote a business. A blog can say far more about a small business than any tweet or Facebook update, and individual posts can be shared across social media for maximum exposure. Blogs can also feature video, images and all the things that people enjoy sharing on social media.

Blogging can help you as well if you are a budding writer. One of the biggest advantages of blogging or posting anything on social media is that anybody can do it. This does mean that there are less than brilliant blogs out there, but the only way to really improve at writing is to keep on writing. That is what keeping a blog is really about for the casual blogger. Not all casual bloggers are great writers, but they could be if they have a good blogging platform.

Blogging also helps people keep in touch with the rest of the world. There are blogs that have a rather myopic point of view, but sometimes just voicing your opinion in a public setting can encourage communication and open you up to new experiences and other opinions. The Internet is about communication above all else, and keeping a blog provides plenty of opportunities to communicate with others.

Blogging From Anywhere with Your Smartphone

The easiest way to blog is obviously from a personal computer or laptop, but mobile technology allows people to post to their blogs from anywhere. According to a recent article, iPhones – even older and refurbished models – are perfect for blogging on the go. Every writer has moments of inspiration at inopportune moments, but having a good smartphone with the right app will allow you to strike while the iron is hot and write a short blog post wherever you may be. Posting from an iPhone may not be the ideal situation for blogging, but it will allow you to get your thoughts out until you can better refine them from your home computer.

As much as some people might say otherwise, blogging as a hobby or a marketing tool is far from dead. In fact, modern mobile technology has made it easier than it’s ever been before. As long as there are people willing to write, there will be a blogosphere.

  2. Nowadays you should really concentrate on the design for mobile! Most of the traffic you will generate will be mobile traffic so that is the reason that your theme should be mobile-friendly. I think that is the most important fact in 2014! I think in 2015 it will be also increasing more and more!
In my opinion blogging is still alive, much more than it was last year or the year before or that year before!
